Five things worth sharing from the last week or so, brought to you by a different member of the Browser Media team every Friday.
This week’s My Five is by Joe.
1. The ultimate data visualisation?
I am a bit of a geek. I think it goes with the territory if you have been involved with SEO / digital marketing for as long as I have.
I am also British, so obsessed with the weather. I was therefore over the moon to discover a fairly epic data visualisation tool this week which is, for me, a match made in heaven.
Data visualisation meets the weather:
A great job from InMeteo and a fantastic way to bring data to life! Make sure you play around with the toggles in the bottom left hand corner.
2. SEO / link building is dead. Right?
As mentioned above, I am long in the tooth and have been around for much longer than I care to admit. I have lived through various cycles of SEO and seen a lot of fads come and go, including the declarations that SEO is dead.
To be fair, I don’t really like talking about SEO and much prefer the notion of inbound marketing, darling.
I was, however, very interested to read a new report from US based Stone Temple Consulting that proves how important link building remains when it comes to search engine rankings. It is a good read and demonstrates that links are still one of the most vital signs of a quality site.
Please have a read, but resist the temptation to kick off a mass link building campaign. You should be thinking about earning links rather than building links.
3. How do you do international SEO?
Another surprisingly on-topic highlight in today’s MyFive, the mighty Moz.com published an excellent summary of how you should approach international SEO.
Rather than regurgitating the post here and stealing Kaitlin’s thunder, I would encourage you to have a read as it is definitely one of the more complete and authoritative posts that I have seen on international SEO for some time.
4. #WorldEmojiDay
Did you know that #WorldEmojiDay is on the 17th July, as that is the date shown in the iOS calendar emoji? (The 17th July was the date that Apple originally announced iCal for Mac).
Emojis have seen a meteoric rise and a lot of brands have jumped on the bandwagon, with some doing a lot better than others at avoiding a cringefest.
So who did well on the emoji front on #WorldEmojiDay this year? Nikki Gillihand has a great summary of who did what over on the Econsultancy blog.
5. Amazing own goal
I am fairly rubbish at football and have been known to score the odd own goal over the years but I had a good chuckle at poor old Sammy Ndjock who scored one of the more impressive own goals in Bournemouth’s match against Minnesota United this week:
Amazing!
Have a great weekend.
