My Five: Five things worth sharing from the last week (or so), brought to you by a different member of the Browser Media team every Friday.
This week’s My Five is by Katie.
1. Digital Scousers
For the benefit of those who have missed the news this week, on Wednesday night England beat Brazil in a friendly.
Now I’m not a massive fan of football but I do like to fact-surf the players and clubs, which is when I chanced upon the news that on Tuesday Liverpool FC named its new digital media chief.
Hitting upon the realisation that they needed to step up their online content to reach their growing overseas fan base, Liverpool FC’s digital media offering will now be ticking the boxes for fans that cannot attend matches, including an online video service via iTunes.
Arsenal has also overhauled its website to make it easier for fans to share content on social networks and interact with the club from all corners of the globe.
Apparently gone are the days when just turning up and supporting your local team was enough!
2. Google Intelligence
Also on Wednesday, Google ‘acquired’ Channel Intelligence, a data service that helps brands and retailers boost ecommerce sales.
One of the original launch partners for Google Shopping, Channel Intelligence will serve to improve the shopping experience for online buyers and sellers.
Google reportedly paid ‘$125 million in cash’. I’m not sure what exactly what went down, but in my head I see many, many briefcases containing $100 bills and a dodgy exchange in the lower level of a dimly lit car park.
More about that here.
3. Whiteboard Wednesday
Facebook has decided that the way to achieve global domination is to just copy stuff from people that do it quite well.
Most recently, Facebook has decided that Whiteboard Fridays by SEOMoz are pretty cool and they want to get on-board.
With Fridays already taken, Facebook has decided that Wednesday is the day for them, and have launched Facebook Developers Live as a “central place to learn about the latest tools and to get access to product manager and engineers who created them.”
The video channel will include live and recorded broadcasts, plus a chance for developers to have their questions answered by Facebook staff.
4. Ten Billion Ringtones
If you’re a business without a mobile app or a smartphone friendly website, then its time to get yourself sorted out.
According to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update, by the end of 2013 there will be more mobile devices than people on this planet.
Cisco predict that by 2017 there will be more than 10 billion mobile-connected devices, and that mobile network speeds will grow by seven times to what they currently are.
Mobile traffic worldwide grew 70% in 2012, nearly double what it was in 2011. Mobile video continues to grow too, having made up 51% of all mobile traffic in 2012. By 2017 it is predicted that video will account for two-thirds of all global mobile data.
5. Social Network Annoyers
If you, like me, are regularly annoyed by people on Facebook, you can now make yourself feel slightly better by putting them into categories.
There’s the ‘Vaguebooker’, the ‘Humblebragger’, the ‘We get it, your kid is cute’ and the ‘Oversharer’. I’m pretty sure that you will know someone who fits into each of these categories, but which one are you?
If you have kids there’s an 88% chance you are posting pictures of them, and subsequently boring the hell out of your childless friends with all of your parenting talk.
If you’ve got an ex that you’re still a little hung up on, then you might be one of the 25% of men and 20% of women under the age of 35 who uses Facebook for stalking, and admits to looking at their ex’s profile once a month.
Me? I’d say I’m a bit of a ‘Lurker judger’ – silent and judgemental, and a bit of a ‘Status hole’, because when everyone else is posting pictures of their kids or being overly dramatic, what else is there to do?
