Mobile applications have become part of every day life for the majority of smartphone users among us.
We rely on apps to organise our lives, share our thoughts or whereabouts and keep up to date with breaking news.
There are apps for gaming, apps for banking, apps for fitness, apps for business, apps for marketing, probably apps for comparing apps.
Unless there’s a specific app you’re searching for, the chances are you’ve only ever got as far as the top 25 list in the iTunes App Store.
But there’s more to the App Store than the top downloads list, half a million more! Earlier this week iPhone app review blog – 148Apps – reported this impressive 500,000 ‘approved’ app milestone.
To mark the occasion, the app review company teamed up with Chomp – the app search tool company – and games developer – Chillingo – to create an infographic to summarise the app landscape.
Here are some key takeaways:
- 37% of all apps are free
- The top three categories, as ranked by download are – games (15%), Books (14%) and Entertainment (11%)
- The most popular paid app of all time, based on days at number 1 is Angry Birds
- The average price per paid app is $3.64
- 15 billion+ apps sold in 2011 (including iPhones, iPods and iPads)
Some very impressive figures considering the store is still less than three years old. It seems for Apple and ios developers, the only way really is up.
