Five things worth sharing from the last week (or so), brought to you by a different member of the Browser Media team every Friday.
This week’s My Five is by Josh.
1. Thanks for all the laughs
In the wake of Mr Williams passing I thought it would be nice to have something to remember him by, check out Robin Williams: 50 Great Quotes in The Telegraph.
My personal favourite from this list is ‘I don’t have a college degree, and my father didn’t have a college degree, so when my son, Zachary, graduated from college, I said, “My boy’s got learnin”‘ It just goes to show what you can do without a degree.
2. That Tweet that could see you in front a Judge
In the news this week was a story about an 18 year old young man from Sunderland who Tweeted about the Malaysia Airways flight MH17. His tweet nearly landed him in court and up for prosecution due to it’s offensive content but was let off as his Tweet was not offensive enough (?). As a user of Twitter I see it as a great tool to keep in touch with the world, see what celebs are up to and voice my opinions. There are boundaries however. I see a lot of “Trolls” on social networking who think what they are doing is funny but in actual fact it is quite hurtful and just plain bullying.
My question is, when will they realise this too? Should Twitter monitor Tweets more carefully and if things like this keep happening, how do they stop it? Can Twitter stop them as it is a social platform? Is it worth Twitter having a team of people responsible for monitoring hashtags or topics in the news that could be controversial or lead to these kind of instances?
3. Football is BACK!
As I’m sure many of you are aware the Football Leagues started kicking off last week, the Community Shield has been played (well done Arsenal) and the Premier League will be kicking off on Saturday. Football fans have had a feast of football this year with the Premiership finishing in March, the World Cup starting in June through to July and the Premiership starting back again in August. It’s been constant and as a sports fan I’ve loved it. However as a Blackburn Rovers fan I dread the start of every season and prepare for disappointment but live in hope. I am however looking forward to seeing who will win the Premiership this year. Will it be Louis Van Gaal’s rejuvenated Man United? Will Liverpool finish what they started last year? Will Arsenal’s two trophies in four months be the start of something? Or will the Citizen’s do it again?
4. Turtle Power! Again…
If anyone reading this is anything like me they will be part excited, part intrigued by Hollywood’s fascination with the “Reboot”. I am still trying to get my head around the constant need for those Hollywood types to rehash, remaster and remake classic films from everyone’s childhood. Don’t get me wrong some of them needed it but a little part of me, the child inside says “No, not them!”.
I realise it is a solid marketing tool used by toy makers and film makers alike to remake a classic movie with a cult following but sometimes I just don’t want the original memories of some films replaced. That being said I am looking forward to taking my step-son to see the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie and trying to recite the original Go Ninja, Go Ninja GO lyrics. T-U-R-T-L-E POWER!
5. “Apparently” this kid is now an internet sensation
This young man has been all over social media recently and I wasn’t so sure why until I saw this video. He’s a natural in front of the camera. Somebody sign him up!
