My Five: Five things worth sharing from the last week (or so), brought to you by a different member of the Browser Media team every Friday.
This week’s My Five is by Joe.
1. What do Britain’s SMEs think about digital marketing?
A shameless plug for some of our own content but if you haven’t seen our latest infographic and research this week, then have a look now. Some interesting stats about what SMEs think about marketing their websites and whether they invest in the channel.
2. What influences our buying behaviour?
Search Engine Land published an interesting article yesterday showing some research from a ‘retail engagement firm’ called Parago. The research looked at factors involved with consumers buying stuff online and provides an interesting insight into consumers when they are in buying mode.
The key points for me are:
- social is NOT a strong research channel when buying things
- search engines remain hugely important – who said that SEO is dead?
Definitely worth a read.
3. April Fools’ Day 2014
I enjoy the 1st April as it always heralds some unabashed fun. Google usually has a good crack at things and this year saw some good efforts.

If you missed out on the fun this year, you can see some of the better jokes over on The Guardian’s website.
4. Parallax scrolling and SEO
I have always thought that ‘canonicalisation’ is the worst word that I find myself having to use at work. If you know us at Browser Media, you will know that we are a straight talking bunch and try to avoid jargon as much as we can. The issue of canonicalisation is a geeky one and I never enjoy saying the word.
A new contender has appeared for the ‘worst word’ award with the advent of the latest design fad. ‘Parallax’ scrolling hardly rolls of the tongue (and don’t get me started on my thoughts about its overuse on occasion…)
Parallax scrolling can be incredibly creative and engaging, but it does introduce some challenges when thinking about SEO and ensuring that search engines can understand your content. The mighty Moz published an extremely good post this week that looks at the issue and should be a must read if you are thinking about introducing it on your website.
5. You will respect my authoritah!
No, I am not suggesting that Matt Cutts is a modern day Eric Cartman but Google’s head of webspam published a video that looks at how Google is evolving its algorithms to evaluate authority:
It is an interesting watch and shows that Google knows that things aren’t perfect at the moment but they are working hard to bring us the best results.
Have a great weekend!
