My Five: Five things worth sharing from the last week (or so), brought to you by a different member of the Browser Media team every Friday.

1. Pinterest announces launch of new recipe search engine
I’m a huge Pinterest fan and was really excited by the news that they are launching a new feature: recipe search. Users will be able to search by recipe, specific ingredients and even dietary requirements to find recipes from across the site and create boards. Food and recipes accounted for 18% of all pins in 2013 so it’s great to see Pinterest creating a new feature in response to user trends.
2. Google updates search filters
Google recently changed the menu on its search result page. Search options like ‘blogs’ and ‘discussions’ have been removed. It is a relatively minor change, but it will have an impact on searches and it hasn’t gone down well with Google users.
When Search Engine Round Table covered the news, comments included “This is the final straw for me and I will be using a different search engine.” and “Thanks again again Google for TELLING me what’s more important to me than letting poor old me decide for myself.”
However a feature they have added means searches will now adjust dynamically to suit the topic of your search query. From what I can see “web” and “images” will always appear first. Search for “winter boots” and the shopping tab is next.
However a search for “Gravity” will show the video tab next to Web and Images.
A Google spokesperson said “We’re always making changes to Search to help you find the most useful things more easily”. I’m not sure how this will directly benefit my searches and make it easier as I know how to use the tabs but for the novice, it might be helpful.
3. Why didn’t you sell your $50,000 Twitter username?…
…is the first question that popped into my head when I read this story. Nevertheless this highlights the importance of online security and the huge loopholes that still exist. In short, this is a story of hacker extortion through PayPal and GoDaddy to steal a Twitter username.
Why this particular username in question? I don’t know. But if someone offered me $50,000 dollars for my username… I’d take the money and run.
4. HOW DOES HE DO IT?!
