Apple is well on the way to achieving 10 billion total app downloads, thanks to the millions of iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users who continue to fill their devices with applications for all manor of purposes.
The company’s website is counting up to the milestone and a this rate it looks like the 10 billionth app will be downloaded sometime in the next week.
As you can see in the image above, Apple is running a promotion for that final push – offering a $10,000 iTunes voucher to the person who downloads the 10 millionth app. In UK terms, that equates to about £6,300 in iTunes vouchers – that’s a lot of music / movies /apps.
As part of the countdown to this milestone, Apple has unveiled a page within the iTunes Store that shows the top app downloads of all time. These are broken in to four categories: Top Free iPhone Apps, Top Paid iPhones Apps, Top Free iPad Apps, and Top Paid iPad Apps.
Below, find the full top 10 list for each category. As you will see, the vast majority of the apps are fairly obvious candidates, but there are a few surprising exceptions…
